O'Grady was born in Wheaton, Illinois and attended the Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton within Illinois and then graduated in 1981 with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. She appeared in a few commercials prior to moving in Los Angeles in 1986. O'Grady's early career was as model for Montgomery Ward model, where she was also featured in several commercials. She appeared in 1988's romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later cast as a recurring character in ABC drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest and appeared on independent movies as well as television series. Donna Abandando played her first lead role in ABC's NYPD Blue which is a police drama. O'Grady, who played the large-haired secretariat between 1993 and 1996, was awarded Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting Actress. In 1995, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in Drama Series together with the ensemble.
