O'Neil auditioned for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. The judges were impressed with her singing and she advanced to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was given high marks from judges. However, she suffered major defeats in the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed on the third row, as well as the second place. They were stunned by the outcome and urged viewers to show support for singers with impressive singing skills such as Melissa. In spite of consistently impressive performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. Her performance on the 7th September of 2005 was awe-inspiring that the judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol right away.
